Kaepernick to tryout for NFL
NFL clubs were informed Tuesday that a private workout will be held for free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick on Saturday in Atlanta, but the event is closed to the public.
The timing seems very weird as tomorrow begins the Impeachment process for President Donald Trump and various outlets are asking if this is a PR stunt or a distraction from that hearing? Others are asking if the NFL is worried about another lawsuit and basically doing this to discourage any more legal proceedings. Either way the cat is out of the bag and NFL teams seem interested!
Several clubs have inquired about Kaepernick's current football readiness. He's been out of football since 2016, when he began protesting police brutality and racial injustice by kneeling during the pregame national anthem. He recently won an EMMY for his Nike television commercial so the timing seems perfect for him to garner interest from some teams that are very desperate for an experienced quarterback.
In the memo, the league said: "Earlier this year, we discussed some possible steps with his representatives and they recently emphasized his level of preparation and that he is ready to work out for clubs and be interviewed by them. We have therefore arranged this opportunity for him to work out, and for all clubs to have the opportunity to evaluate his current readiness and level of interest in resuming his NFL career."
From Kaepernick’s perspective, it’s far more preferable for a workout to happen with coaches and General Managers present, so that they can put him through the paces and directly observe his abilities. The league’s willingness to record the workout and send it to interested teams means nothing; Kaepernick could do that himself as he has done in the past.
Under the present circumstances, then, it feels like this workout is far less about getting Kaepernick placed on a team and far more about creating the impression that the NFL is trying to help him get a job, without really helping him get a job.
Either way, NFL fans are sure to have their say either for or against Kaepernick as he is lightning rod and will continue to be for the rest of his life. The city that brings him aboard will either be blessed or cursed depending on how good of a quarterback he still is and will be, but it will be interesting to see if he is booed half as much as Donald Trump when and if he makes his first appearance. Stay tuned….
